Location: PERTHSHIRE
Stage: DETAIL DESIGN
For series of three small cabins bordering the ancient Pictish kingdom of Fife, our design looked loosely at primitive construction techniques of hillforts in the region, predominantly timber structures above local stone walling and footings.
The beauty of the Pictish hillfort remains lies in their balance of organic form and connection to the land, with a sense of human craft. From a distance they appear as rocky outcrops, then reveal their true nature on closer inspection.
The asymmetrical roof pitch and sharp angles ensure a slightly varied and abstracted impression of the cabins from different approach lines, set back into a rather exposed ridge on a challenging site, which met very favourably with planning authorities in addition to our proposals for a highly sustainable material specification and energy strategy.
